Bolt Mechanical was recently asked to do some fire safety work on a large property involving an Orange County fire hydrant replacement and section valve replacements. In this blog we will walk through the fire hydrant replacement portion of the job.
Site inspection:
Upon arriving at the job site we inspected the existing hydrant. This allowed us to ascertain the work involved. In this particular case, the fire hydrant and supporting systems were installed in 1977. Not only would we need to replace the hydrant, but we would also need to update the system and fittings used to install it.
Challenges:
Large concrete thrust blocks are needed to hold the hydrant in place. In order to do a complete fire hydrant replacement we would also need to remove the concrete block.
Solution:
We started by removing the dry barrel hydrant. Once that was removed, we were left with one “bury and valve” piece and the concrete thrust block. We removed the thrust block with a hydraulic breaker attachment and lots of patience.
For this particular job, a wet barrel hydrant was selected to replace the old hydrant. Wet barrel hydrants provide many benefits, including immediate water availability, easier and cheaper maintenance and individual outlet control, which allows multiple hoses to operate independently.
During an Orange County fire hydrant replacement, we now use specialized restraints when using mechanical joint style fittings, in lieu of the push-on style. These are designed to give added strength to the hydrant.
Benefits:
Now the location has a new reliable wet barrel fire hydrant, ready to be used in the case of a fire emergency. This fire hydrant provides a rapid and reliable water supply for the surrounding buildings.
